Video inspection
See what’s really going on in your pipes. Find out the root cause of slow draining pipes and clogs that just keep coming back. Video inspection pinpoints the trouble—allowing us to see the exact problem and determine the best solution to permanently solve it. It’s the most effective method available to locate suspected problem areas. Therefore, once we have repaired it, we can take another look to verify your pipes are clean and unobstructed.

Video inspection can show:

* Broken, cracked, crushed or collapsed pipes

* Offset pipes – sewer pipes that have become misaligned from shifting soil, ground freezes or settling.

* Blockages – pipes that are obstructed from grease buildup or foreign objects.

* Bellied pipe – a section of pipe that has sunk due to ground or soil conditions, resulting in a valley that collects paper and waste.

* Leaking joints – the seals between pipes have broken, allowing water to escape.

* Root infiltration – tree or shrub roots have invaded the sewer line, preventing normal cleaning or damaging the pipe.

* Off-grade and corroded pipes – pipes that have deteriorated from corrosion or because they were constructed of sub-standard material.

Tips & Hints:

(Note to designer: These tips will change – please put 4 tips up when designing the site. Use one from each category.)

Here are some plumbing tips and hints to help you solve minor plumbing issues yourself. Remember, A Rooter-Man Plumbers, your plumbing experts, are only a phone call away!

In the kitchen

What you can and can’t put in the garbage disposal

OK to put in the garbage disposal:

  • Leftover food from your plate
  • Egg shells
  • Most vegetable peels, especially in small amounts
  • Coffee grounds

NOT OK to put in the garbage disposal:

  • Anything that is not biodegradable food (metal, plastic, cigarette butts)
  • Bones
  • Grease
  • Fibrous and stringy fruits and vegetables, e.g. banana skins, corn husks, corn cobs

How to get rid of odors in your garbage disposal

Odors come from a built up of food debris. To get remove them:

  1. Put ice cubes and peels of a citrus fruit (lemon, lime, orange) in the disposal
  2. Run it for 30 seconds with cold running water
  3. Squirt some liquid dish detergent into the disposal while its still running
  4. Run the cold water for another 30 seconds to wash all the debris away.

How to get rid of odors in your kitchen sink

  1. Pour ½ cup of baking soda into the drain
  2. Carefully pour 1 cup white vinegar down the drain on top of the baking soda. The mixture will fizz.
  3. Put the stopper in the sink to close off the drain. If you have a double sink, do this for both sinks at the same time.
  4. Leave for several minutes.
  5. Boil some hot water – about 6 cups – and pour it down the drain to finish cleaning it out.

How to unclog a drain with a plunger

A plunger needs to be used properly to effectively clear a drain.

  • Choose a plunger with a suction cup that’s large enough to completely cover the drain opening
  • Fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger cap
  • Use a wet rag to block off all the other outlets – overflow, second drain in a double sink, etc.
  • Insert the plunger into the water at an angle so that no air is trapped under it.
  • Holding the plunger upright, use 15 to 20 vigorous strokes (not just two or three)
  • Repeat plunging two or three times.

How to retrieve a lost item from the drain

If you dropped something small and valuable down the drain, you’ll need to remove the trap to get it back. You can also use this method to unclog a plug in this part of the drain.

  1. Put a bucket underneath the trap to catch the water. If you’ve used chemicals, use a chemical-resistant bucket, wear gloves and shield your eyes.
  2. Loosen the two ends of the nut couplings, either by hand or with a pipe wrench.
  3. Once the trap comes off, remove the item or clog from the trap.
  4. Reassemble.

In the bathroom

How to conserve water

An easy way to start conserving water is to install a low-flow shower head. Depending on your current utility rates, you can save from $70 to $125 a year on water and energy bills. There are two types of low-flow shower heads—aerating and non-aerating.

Aerating: This type mixes air into the water stream, maintaining a steady pressure and giving the flow and even, full shower spray.

Non-aerating: This type makes the water flow pulse, giving a massaging effect with a strong spray.

Either kind provide for an excellent shower, saving you money and reducing water consumption.

How to detect a leak in your toilet

Put several drops of dark food coloring into your toilet tank. If the dye appears in the bowl, you’ve got a leak. The fix? Replace the valve seal ball or flapper at the bottom of the tank.

How to unclog a toilet

  1. Try clearing the clog with a plunger.
  2. Use a closet auger to clear any plugs in the trap. Put the auger into the toilet with the upturned tip going into the drain and push it down as you crank to the right. Once you feel the cable snake through the trap, crank it to the left and pull it back out. Flush the toilet and repeat as needed.

How to unclog a bathroom sink

Clearing a clogged bathroom sink is much like unclogging the kitchen sink. Most sink clogs can be cleared with a plunger. You can also try removing the stopper and cleaning out any hair or slime that might be stuck to it. If that still doesn’t work, you might need to try a plumber’s snake or call in the experts.

How to clear bath tub and shower clogs

  1. If you have a pop-up stopper, check that it is opening all the way and that it is free of hair and debris. If you can take it out and try the next step.
  2. If there is a screen over the drain, unscrew the screw that holds it in place and take it off. Using a bent coat hanger or wire, fish out any hair or debris that is clogging the drain.
  3. If the drain is still clogged, use the plunger (see the method for unclogging sinks). Make sure you stuff a wet cloth into the opening at the bottom of the overflow plate.

How to fix a leaking shower head

If the shower head leaks where it meats the arm, replace the washer. Loosen the collar with pliers and unscrew the head from the adjusting ring.

Removing white gunk from the shower head and restoring water pressure

The white gunk is a buildup of mineral deposits. They can cause erratic or weak pressure and look unsightly. To remove them:

  1. Pour a cup or so of white vinegar into a small plastic bag.
  2. Fix the plastic bag over the showerhead (so that it’s soaking in the vinegar) and leave it overnight.
  3. The next day, remove the bag and use an old toothbrush to scrub off the deposits.

Foul odors from infrequently used bathrooms

The water trap under the sink keeps bad odors from getting into your house by creating a barrier. If the water evaporates because the sink isn’t used for a long period, odors from the drains can enter the house. To solve the problem, pour water into each trap in the room (sink, shower, floor drain, etc.).

Simple fixes and strange noises:

Drain gurgling

Drain gurgling is usually caused by a clog. Removing the clog should fix this problem.

Whistling noise

Whistling noises can be caused by a broken water faucet, extremely high water pressure, or a toilet valve that is slowly leaking.

Strange noises coming from the water heater

Noises and rumbling sounds coming from a water heater mean that sediment has built up on the bottom of the heater. The noise is boiling water trapped in the sediment. To fix it:

  1. Drain a few gallons of water from the bottom of the tank.
  2. Attach a drain hose to the valve at the bottom of the tank.
  3. Allow it to drain for about five minutes into a floor drain, laundry tub of bathtub. DO NOT drain it onto your lawn or toilet bowl.

Newer water heaters often prohibit buildup of sediment in the tank, heating water more efficiently. If you have severe buildup, it may be time to replace it.

How to quiet noisy pipes

Banging pipes can be caused by several things.

If your pipes bang when you turn on the water, they are probably striking against something.

  • If you can see the pipes move, place padding or foam insulation behind the pipe or at each end where it emerges from behind the wall.
  • If the pipe is loose within its strap of U-clamp, slit a piece of old garden hose behind the strap or clamp to fill the gap.
  • If the pipe is striking against a masonry wall, wedge a block of wood between the pipe and the wall. Nail the block to the wall with masonry nails or screws and attach the pipe to the wood with a pipe strap. When securing a pipe, anchor it with enough room so that it can expand a contract with changes in temperature.
  • If supply pipes and drain pipes that are right next to each other are hitting together, either solder the pipes together or wedge a piece of rubber between them.
  • If the pipes are vibrating because of high water pressure, reduce the water pressure.

If you hear noise only when you turn on the hot water, it means the water heater is set too high. The noise is steam rumbling through the hot water system. Turning the heat setting down may silence the pipes.

Noisy drain pipes – ones that make a sucking noise as the water drains down the sink – mean that a vent (such as the overflow one) is restricted or non-existent. This is a potentially serious problem as it means the water seal isn’t able to function, allowing sewer gas back up into your home. Install an antisiphon trap – or call us to take care of it!

Preventing problems:

Keep your pipes from freezing

Prevent freezing and bursting pipes by:

  • Run a trickle of water running from faucets
  • Run a small heater or heat lamp near exposed pipes
  • Wrap un-insulated pipes with self-adhesive insulating tape, foam or newspapers
  • Leave doors ajar between heated and unheated rooms
  • If your pipes do freeze, act quickly and thaw them before they burst

Keep your drains clog-free

Taking some easy and simple precautions can help you keep from having slow or clogged drains.

  • Don’t pour grease down the kitchen sink
  • Don’t use drain cleaners too often, especially if you have brass, cast-iron or steel traps and drain pipes. Cleaners are caustic and can corrode your pipes.
  • Clean pop-up stoppers in the bathroom sink once a week.
  • Clean the drain strainer in the bath tub, shower and basement floor. Remove the strainer by unscrewing the screws and use a bent wire to clean out debris and hair.
  • If you have a pop-up stopper in your bath tub, remove the overflow plate on your bathtub and pull up the pop-up stopper to clean it.
  • Keep the sewer pipes from the house free of tree roots that might invade them. Call a professional plumber to use an auger to remove them once a year, if necessary.
  • Whenever you clean out your downspouts and gutters on the roof, flush the drain-waste and vent systems as well. Run water from the garden host into all the vents for a minute or two each.

What to do until the emergency plumber arrives:

While waiting for your emergency plumber, you can help to control water damage.

If a pipe bursts and floods your house, immediately close the main shutoff valve. If your plumbing emergency stems from a specific fixture, turn off the valve next to it.
