Viaggio in Islanda

“When Joanna created my logo, brochure and business card she was extremely professional and attentive to details, working and tweaking until they were perfect. She was very creative and helpful. I only had to give her the outline of what I wanted and she did the rest. I look forward to working with her again, knowing it will be a good experience and I that I’ll be very happy with the result.”

RIT Online Learning brochure Print E-mail

The Online Learning department at Rochester Institute of Technology needed a brochure to market their services to interested faculty at RIT and to give out at conferences. Earthscribe delivered clear, concise copy for the brochure and teamed with a freelance graphic designer and local printer. This turnkey project management allowed the client to concentrate on what they wanted their brochure to do for them, rather than worry about the details of getting it done, knowing their final product would be delivered on time for their next conference.

Online Learning supports effective teaching and learning across the entire continuumof computer-mediated instruction:

Online <–––> Blended <–––> Technology-enhanced

ONLINE COURSES are taught asynchronously through the Internet and myCourses, allowing students to take classes from anywhere. All online courses are instructor-led
and highly interactive; typical activities include online discussions and debates, real-time chat and web-conferencing sessions, small groupwork, self-testing exercises and simulations.

BLENDED COURSES integrate an appealing combination  of classroom and online interaction. Most blended courses replace 25 to 50 percent of classroomtimewith
online instructor-guided activities through myCourses. These courses allow for more active learning and flexible scheduling, while maintaining the face-to-face
contact characteristic of the classroom.

TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED COURSES are on-campus classroom courses integrating various instructional technologies—using myCourses to distribute course materials, post grades and other feedback online and offer convenient submission of work through the Dropbox; or that use student-response and web-conferencing systems.

myCourses
Interact with students, post course related information, offer quizzes and exams with automatic grading and create a flexible and interactive environment for every type of course. This web-based software has both academic and non-instructional uses. Its integrated class and group e-mail lists, discussion boards and live chat facilitate online communities and
even search committees. myCourses is associated with all 12,000 RIT courses offered each year. It’s had more than 1 million student logins since summer 2005 and 47 percent of all courses use one or more of its features.

Teaching and Learning Technology lab
Use this campus resource to develop your skills in online instruction and create class materials. Here you can create a range of course materials from simple handouts and PowerPoint presentations to multimedia audio/video streaming projects. We offer faculty development workshops and one-on-one sessions in teaching online, using course management systems and instructional tools.

StudioG
Record video lectures or voice annotated PowerPoint presentations in the easy-to-use StudioG. Part of the Teaching and Learning Technology Lab, StudioG is equipped with
professional audio and video equipment. After an initial introduction to the facility, you can use it on your own.

Web conferencing
Share PowerPoint presentations and other materials online, bring in a guest expert from anywhere in the world, or advise a student at another location “in-person.” This web-based communication tool allows audio and video discussion, whiteboards and text chat. More than 200 RIT faculty have used this technology since its launch in summer 2006.

Online course evaluations
Find out how students rate your class quickly and efficiently. This tool can give you immediate feedback, summary reports, compare results with other instructors teaching the same course and offer an overall look at the entire department and college’s performance, depending on how your department has set up its reporting features. More than 20 percent of RIT courses use online course evaluations, with only 6 percent of those being online courses.

Clipboard survey tool
Want to know what people think about something? Survey them! The Clipboard online survey system allows RIT faculty and staff to set up, deliver and evaluate surveys with a
user-friendly web-based tool. More than 2,000 surveys have been developed and deployed since spring 2004.

StudentResponse Systems
Often called “clickers” on campus, these wireless keypads are used in classroom-based courses to get input from a large audience within seconds. They allow faculty to assess students’ understanding of a topic, actively engage students through surveys and pretest questions and take attendance. Clickers are one example of how Online Learning supports campus technology as a whole, bringing new tools and techniques into the classroom. More than 100 courses with more than 1,500 students have used clickers
since fall 2005.

Customized approaches
Don’t see what you’re looking for? Online Learning stays on top of emerging technology and thrives on collaborations with faculty. For example, we’ve supported
projects that explore live ASL interpreting of web conferences, tablet PCs, online peer-to-peer evaluation systems, podcasting and virtual learning environments such as Second Life. You can use a variety of techniques and technology to deliver your courses. We’ll help you sort through the options to design learning activities that coincidewith your desired learning outcomes.
